“When I became a business owner, I wanted to make sure I was part of creating a positive culture within our offices and team.  Leadership starts at the top and I make it a priority to constantly assess myself to make sure I am delivering on our key principles.”

Stacey Huskey has spent the last seven years building her Merry Maids franchise in Virginia Beach and Newport News, Virginia. Here, and in honor of Women’s History Month, Stacey shares her advice for other women looking to grow their franchise business.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
Put people first, and don’t overreact to decisions.

What advice do you have for women looking to grow their own business?
Being a business owner is hard whether you are a man or a woman, and success does not happen overnight. But women can sometimes be pre-judged a bit differently as well as can have more on their plate in their home life. Stay focused on your path of what success looks like to you and do not get discouraged. Use obstacles as motivation to drive you and celebrate the wins when you overcome them.

What do you wish more people knew about being a woman in business?
It’s hard! For me, it was about discovering the type of leader I wanted to be and how I was going to execute that. As a women in business you will automatically have to work harder when it comes to gaining respect in the work force. I underestimated that when I became an owner and underestimated how many of my employees who had never had a female boss.  As a woman, I learned that I can still be myself and didn’t have to change who I was to be a good leader which I think is an easy mistake some can make.

What’s an accomplishment or win that makes you especially proud?
When I became a business owner, I wanted to make sure I was part of creating a positive culture within our offices and team.  Leadership starts at the top and I make it a priority to constantly assess myself to make sure I am delivering on our key principles. As franchise owners, we are nothing without our team so I take pride when we can create a positive atmosphere where our team feels valued and that they are part of a family. Its icing on the cake when you can successfully grow your business by keeping this at the foundation. That is what makes me most proud.
